Mont Aiguille, at an altitude of 2086 metres, dominates the Trièves! Climbing it is a unique and unforgettable experience.
Climbing the ‘inaccessible mountain’
Follow in the footsteps of the pioneers of mountaineering by climbing the famous “Mont Inaccessible”! You can tackle the normal route, the most classic and easy, which is also suitable for beginners (provided you don’t suffer from vertigo!).
It is open from May to October.
Other more difficult routes await experienced climbers: La Tour des Gémeaux and the routes on the south-east and south-west faces. Climbing Mont Aiguille requires suitable equipment and supervision by a qualified person (see below), particularly because of the abseiling on the way down.
How do I get to the summit of mont aiguille?
To get to the foot of the Mont-Aiguille cliffs before climbing them, you’ll need to do an approach walk lasting around an hour and a half. Access to the summit is via a normal mountain route (easy climbing). There is a 50-metre abseil on the way down.
There are two places to park:
- North side: after the village of Saint-Michel-Les-Portes, near the hamlet of “La Bâtie” (in the commune of Gresse-en-Vercors).
- On the south side: in the commune of Chichilianne, at a place called La Richardière.
Did you know?
You can also try this adventure without a car: if you arrive in Clelles by train or bus from Grenoble or Lyon, it’s an hour’s walk to Chichilianne. You’ll spend the night there and meet up with your guide in the morning! (This information can be found in our brochure Ecotourism: car-free holidays)
be guided on your ascent of Mont Aiguille
The guides are there to take you to the summit of this monolith. As well as the technical and material aspects, they’ll give you the benefit of their knowledge of the environment and the region to help you discover this mythical Mont-Aiguille.
Mont Aiguille, an exceptional site in need of protection
Mont-Aiguille is part of the Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors Nature Reserve, the largest in mainland France. A few rules are therefore essential to protect this unique site. It is now forbidden to bivouac on the summit meadow of Mont Aiguille for environmental protection reasons, according to a decree issued by Chichilianne town hall.
